COMMUNITY GARDENING AND COMMUNITY COMPOSTING

February 1, 2010

The Garden Club is looking for ways to make money to increase our account balance. We would like to raffle a quilt next Yuletide. I would like for 20 people to each take a 12X14 quilt square and sew a picture either by embroidery or applique, but NOT by fabric paint, of a garden scene. This can be of a flower, or garden beds or something pertaining to gardening. Each square is cut to 12X14 but I need a 2" border of fabric. 20 squares will make a double size quilt. We can sell tickets all Summer and Fall and into the Yuletide festivities and auction it off at the Yuletide Ball. I have the squares here, just call 973-2514 if you are interested in making a square.

Report by Dorothy Brady

Mission Statement:  To turn the “GARDEN CITY OF ALASKA” into the GARDEN CITY OF ALASKA!

History:  Skagway residents in 1981 planted 100 Mountain Ash along Ferry Way continuing the pioneer efforts as THE SKAGWAY GARDEN CLUB “Over a century of digging the dirt”.

Later, in 2000, 50 trees were planted by volunteers along 23rd Avenue.

In 2003 20 berry and rose bushes, 10 Birch trees, and 10 Red Osier Dogwood bushes along the river by the south foot bridge.

The breaking of ground for the current Community Garden site at Alaska and 18th Avenue took place in 2006.  The sign was painted by Laura and erected 2008.

The raised beds are currently worked by:  Bob, Megan, Laura, Cat and Skagway City School children, grades K-6.

Our plan for this summer of 2009:

·         Prepare additional beds for planting.

·         Share seed planting skills through experiential workshops taught by Dorothy Brady in spring.

·         Construction of an on site garden shed for tools.

·         Plant line of trees for wind break.

·         Plant berry bushes along dike.

·         Garden Club meetings every other Sunday at the Library at 3pm.

·         Acquire picnic table.

·         Organize and educate for compost drop off.

·         Organize pick up of compostable organic matter from businesses and households.

·         Community picnic at Long Bay for seaweed gathering.

·         Organize grass clipping donations.

·         Plan timeframe for long range goals.

·         Fundraising drive for $1,000 grow light. equipment for school program: “Grow Light to Garden”.
