LED Streetlights Are Here!
[06APR09] AP&T has installed two LED streetlights in downtown Skagway: at the corner of 2nd and Broadway, and at the corner of 6th and Broadway. They are inviting everybody in town to give them feedback about the quality and scope of light. For their part, APT will be evaluating their ruggedness and cost of maintenance.
The LED streetlights will stay up for the duration (or until our winds blow them down). Later this year, they hope to have the community evaluate the costs and benefits of installing more LED streetlights.

LED Streetlights Coming to Skagway
[17MAR09] AP&T representative Dave Vogel hopes to test a couple of LED streetlights in Skagway soon. AP&T is in the process of buying a couple of LED streetlights, but delivery from the manufacturer could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months from now. If they get them soon, they will try to test them in April. If the lights are delivered later, the test will have to wait until the fall.
AP&T is interested in the LED streetlights because they can provide 40% more light output while using 50% less electricity than traditional streetlights. At the same time, the initial costs for the LED lights is higher. They also have concerns about installation, maintenance and performance, such as light color and standing up to our severe winter winds. A test will provide more information to AP&T as well as let Skagway citizens evaluate the lights before committing to a large purchase order.
Sustainable Skagway supports the AP&T test, and encourages the Skagway community to consider installation of LED lights to increase energy efficiency. We also want to promote using LED lights that include fixture shields to preserve our night skies.
